While walking for about forty minutes, Jarek passed the Cathedral of Saint Paul, the state capitol building, and finally he was beginning to pass part of the Oakland Cemetery as he headed toward what appeared to be the main entrance along Front Street. Jarek walked through the entrance. A sign was posted off to the side of the drive: No Automobiles Beyond This Point. Within just his first few steps, he immediately began to admire his surroundings. The grounds were fairly wooded with tall bare oak trees. Mausoleums and headstones dotted the rolling rolls. Everything slightly covered in snow was truly beautiful.
Jarek still did not know who or what he was specifically looking for. He figured the best choice would be to simply walk around the grounds. He didnât mind that approach either. Jarek enjoyed walking through cemeteries . . . for several reasons. He had had many experiences of all types in graveyards, from exciting encounters with entities to calming and meaningful moments that he would always treasure.
Continuing down the path, Jarek began reading the names on the headstones of the people buried there, dating back to the Civil War era. There were monuments and headstones of all types, from simple memorials in the ground to grand tombs and statues. He felt the most peaceful that he had since leaving New York City and coming to Saint Paul. This peacefulness allowed for him to truly think and process everything that had occurred since he arrived on the train to this city.
The path seemed to go on for a way, with several forks and side paths to choose from. Jarek began to hear a gentle flow of water from the creek, just ever so slightly. It was most likely nearly frozen over, he thought to himself. Sure enough, after he walked around a small bend in the path and up a small hill, he came to a bridge over a creek. A gently flowing creek that was mostly iced over wound its way through the cemetery. The sound of the water flowing, birds singing and chirping, and the distant rumble of automobiles muffled by the snow coverage was all Jarek could hear. The grounds of cemetery were vacant . . . except for one person he could see standing near a headstone in the distance.
As Jarek crossed the small stone bridge, he continued to admire the cemetery grounds and the beauty of nature in the middle of a bustling city. If he hadnât walked here during the daylight, he would have sworn he had left the city entirely. As he continued to walk, he was getting closer to the only other person he could see. It became clear it was a woman in a long black coat, an emerald-green hat, and a sable-colored muff over her hands. He knew this combination looked familiar from just this morning. She was standing near a small gray granite headstone. Jarek could tell that she was deep in thought and unaware that someone was approaching her.
